God is Faithful
In today’s devotion, we will continue exploring Psalm 18. Yesterday David praised God as
the source of his strength. Today, we will see how David proclaims that he has received God’s favor because he has devoted his life to following and honoring God. Before we go any further, let’s offer up a prayer.
Heavenly Father, I love You and praise Your holy name. You are so faithful and good to me, even as I struggle to be anywhere near as faithful and obedient to You. Thank You for sticking with me and helping me through my times of disobedience and weakness. I am so thankful for Your assurance that You will never give up on me. Amen.
Psalm 18:20-29 (NLT)
20 The Lord rewarded me for doing right;
he restored me because of my innocence.
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
I have not turned from my God to follow evil.
22 I have followed all his regulations;
I have never abandoned his decrees.
23 I am blameless before God;
I have kept myself from sin.
24 The Lord rewarded me for doing right.
He has seen my innocence.
25 To the faithful you show yourself faithful;
to those with integrity you show integrity.
26 To the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
27 You rescue the humble,
but you humiliate the proud.
28 You light a lamp for me.
The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.
29 In your strength I can crush an army;
with my God I can scale any wall.
In this portion of Psalm 18, David expresses how faithful God has been to him because he has obeyed God’s commands and has devoted his life to following and honoring Him. That’s not to say David lived a perfect life, and never stumbled or faltered. We all know the story of David’s sin that caused the death of an innocent man (Uriah) so that he could have his wife Bathsheba, for himself (2 Samuel 11). God was very displeased with David’s actions and David paid dearly for his sins.
David fully acknowledged his sins, and at the time of this psalm he knew God had forgiven him. David was in a different place in his life. He had a clear understanding of just how faithful God was to him. When he wrote this psalm, David knew God had forgiven him of his past sins and he was now clean in God’s eyes. Like me, do you ever carry the guilt of past sins with you? Do you believe Jesus, and the sacrifices He made for us, have released you from past sins?
It is because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we too can proclaim we have been forgiven and made clean. Just as He was with David, God is faithful to those who devote their lives to following and honoring Him. Do you feel you are honoring God and living a faithful life?
