The Genuine Disciple
Jesus' teachings emphasize that merely hearing and knowing God's word lacks in sincere discipleship. Instead, genuine discipleship involves actively living out God's word in obedience. Jesus modeled this principle, not only teaching it, but also by embodying it and prioritizing the Father's will over His own desires. Through submission to God's word, we discover genuine freedom and the fullness of life. Before we dive in, let's spend some time in prayer.
God, I invite Your presence into this moment. Guide me in today’s word, revealing ways which bring clarity to Your plan for me. May this word empower my actions so they align with Your will. Open my heart in revealing what You desire to teach me today. Amen.
James 1:22-25 (NLT)
22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
If we’re being honest, we all have that one mirror in our house that’s preferred over the others. Perhaps it’s the last stop on your way out the door to double check if you’re presentable. The problem with mirrors, however, is they only reflect what’s directly in front of them. They don't capture a full, three-dimensional view of reality, which can limit our perspective.
If we consider God’s law as a mirror, then it stands to reflect His perfect character and attributes. As we stare into this mirror, God’s truth provides us an opportunity to seek guidance and self-reflect. This mirror greets us with grace and insight into His design. As you view your reflection in this mirror, are you allowing God’s law to reveal your imperfections?
This can be uncomfortable, but God’s law is an expression of His grace. Its purpose is to guide us towards a righteous and fulfilling life, offering growth, redemption, and ultimately a closer connection with Him. However, when we simply hear the word without putting it into action, we settle for something less than God’s full design. We become the mirror only reflecting what’s in front of it. God’s full desire is for us to also live His law.
As genuine disciples, we’re called to participate as both hearers and doers of His word. Doing so provides the full, three-dimensional perspective of God’s character by demonstrating His law through our actions. By actively applying God’s word to our lives, we demonstrate God’s compassion, kindness, and reliability to the world. It's through the alignment of His word into our beliefs and actions that we truly embody the abundant life He offers. What are some practical ways you can put God’s word into action in your own life?
